I often use candles for wax play and have simply bought them at the cheapo dollar store. I have not really had any problems (except when My sub handed Me one she had, it was a dripless emergency candle!). If Y/you are concerned with the tempature issue simply experiment by laying the sub(ject) down on the floor, begin by dripping the wax while standing up and then lower down until Y/you find that comfort zone that the wax landing is not too hot. I have only found one or two candles that were too hot. If Y/you are wanting more wax than a single drip look for nice pillar candles and light it ahead of time to allow it melt and form a nice puddle of wax around the wick. Also light several candles. Votives work well and one or two can do an entire scene. Tapers are good for single drips. Pillars are good for puddles of wax. I will say I have noted that some colored candles may be a bit hotter but not alot. Watch out for "specialty" candles. I have a wonderful Halloween candle in the shape of a hand with a wick on each finger. It does burn fairly hotter and I have to hold it well above My sub. Other wise stay away from beeswax. I have not used it but have heard it burns extemely hotter.
I have considered looking into a "crock pot" for melting wax. I have seen some however they melt the wax at too high a temp. I saw a potpouri burner at an event but when I tested it on Myself at 6" above the skin the single drop actually burned. I have been told to wire a rheostat into the electric cord to control the temp. Has anyone had success with this?
If price is not an issue then Y/you can look into the new "spa's" they offer these days. I have seen one in use however a bit out of My price range. The special wax they use for them is also a bit pricey as well. (Helps having a sub working at Target!)
When doing wax play I always have ice and ice water. It is alot of fun to combine them with the hot wax to really confuse the senses.
Enjoy
